GATE PYQs

How to actually use GATE previous year questions

PYQs are the highest-signal practice you can do — the exam's topic families and style repeat. The trick isn't solving more, it's solving them the right way, in the right order. Here's the method that works.

A 4-stage method

Work top-down; each stage uses a different slice of the PYQ set.

  1. 1 · Recent years, exam conditions

Take the last 5 years' full papers as timed tests first — they match the current tone and difficulty. Don't look at answers until the 3 hours are up.

  2. 2 · Topic-wise, working backwards

Then go subject-by-subject, working back through older years to force the full syllabus. Use the topic filter to build a mental map of what your branch actually tests.

  3. 3 · Build the mistake bank

In quiz mode every attempt is logged. Revisit your misses on a 3-day / 2-week / 1-month cycle — that spacing is what converts them into permanent knowledge.

  4. 4 · Feed the mock-test cycle

PYQs sharpen accuracy; mocks (next section of this hub) sharpen speed and section strategy. Alternate them in the final months.

Weight topics by trend, not by syllabus order

The syllabus lists topics; the past papers say which ones actually carry marks in your branch. Use the trend analytics to see which subjects' average marks are rising, and tilt revision time there. A topic with 3 marks a year for a decade is not worth the same time as one that just jumped to 12.

GATE PYQs — frequently asked questions

How many previous-year GATE questions should I solve?

Solve every question from the last 10–15 years of your paper, at least once, before the exam. PYQs are the single highest-signal practice set: the GATE pattern repeats topic families (and the question style), so past questions are the best predictor of what to expect. Our library covers 20 branches with year, subject and topic filters.

What year of PYQs matters most?

Recent years matter most for tone and difficulty — solve the last 5 years' papers in exam conditions first, then work backwards to the older years to cover the full syllabus. Trend analysis (which subjects' marks are rising) helps you weight topics; that's what the per-branch trend analytics are for.

Are PYQs enough to clear GATE?

PYQs are the exam blueprint but not the full syllabus: combine them with concept revision from your textbooks/notes, then full-length mock papers to build speed. A typical working mix is concept study → PYQ practice by topic → full mock tests → revision of your mistake bank.

How should I use wrong answers from PYQs?

Keep a mistake bank (topic, question, why you got it wrong) and revisit it weekly. Re-solve each missed question after 3 days, 2 weeks and 1 month. In our practice mode every attempt is recorded automatically, so the mistake bank builds itself.
