Eligibility

Who can appear for GATE, and what a score unlocks

The exam itself has no age limit and no minimum marks gate. The qualifying (cutoff) marks matter when you use the score — for M.E./M.Tech admission, the MRS scholarship, or PSUs.

Who can apply

GATE is open to a broad band of engineering and science candidates — the rules below are the standard GATE eligibility conditions. Confirm the exact current-year wording in the official brochure.

Eligible courses

B.E. / B.Tech, B.Sc. (Engg), B.S.M.L. and other recognised undergraduate engineering/technology/science programmes

Final-year students

Can appear before the final result — register as a final-year candidate and carry the result forward

Age limit

None

Number of attempts

Unlimited

Two papers

You may appear for one or two compatible papers in a session (brochure lists allowed combinations)

Categories

All categories may appear; qualifying marks differ by category (Gen / OBC / SC / ST / PwD)

Qualifying marks vs a “good” score

Don't confuse the two: the qualifying mark is the minimum to be considered qualified for a given branch and category; admission cutoffs at specific IIT/NIT programmes sit well above it.

The official qualifying marks are declared with the results, branch by branch and category by category. Historically the general-category qualifying line in most papers is around 30–40% of the normalised total, with category reservations lowering the line. Track how far you are above the historical line — that gap is a better early signal than the raw score.

What a GATE score unlocks

  • M.E. / M.Tech admission at IITs, NITs and 200+ other recognised institutions
  • Monthly Research Scholarship (MRS) for M.E./M.Tech — currently ₹12,000/month under the MoE scheme; verify the current rate on the official site
  • PSU recruitment and X-graded officer roles at select public sector undertakings
  • Direct Ph.D. admission at IITs/NITs (GATE scores exempt the CSIR-NET style entrance test)

GATE eligibility — frequently asked questions

Who can appear for GATE?

GATE is open to all students and graduates of undergraduate engineering/technology and science programmes. Final-year students of B.E./B.Tech/B.Sc./B.S.M.L. (and postgraduate students) may also register. There is no age limit and no minimum marks requirement for the exam itself.

Do I need qualifying marks in GATE?

To use GATE scores for M.E./M.Tech admission, MRS scholarship or PSUs, you must score above the qualifying (cutoff) mark for your branch and category — these vary by year and branch. See the cutoffs page for historical qualifying marks.

What does a good GATE score unlock?

M.E./M.Tech admission at IITs/NITs and other recognised institutions, the Monthly Research Scholarship (MRS, currently ₹12,000/month for M.E./M.Tech per the MoE scheme — verify on the official site), and direct recruitment/PSU eligibility. Admissions committees also use GATE scores for Ph.D. admission.

Can I take GATE with only 12th pass or in a new degree?

No. You must be enrolled in or have completed an undergraduate engineering, technology or science degree (or an equivalent). The final-year status rule lets current students appear before graduation.
